This is my summer secret and I'm giving it away freely: water changes everything.
Personally next to any body of water is where I love to be most. Its calming, its meditative, its energetic, its a whole vibe unto itself.
Creeks, rivers, lakes, pools - anywhere there's water nearby, the temperature drops, the light bounces differently, and suddenly you have an entire environment full of things to do that aren't standing in a field trying not to melt. Kids who won't hold still for anything will wade in a creek for an hour. Parents who feel stiff and self-conscious in front of a camera forget I'm there the moment their feet hit the water.
And the images, the reflections, the movement, the wet hair and the genuine laughter... are some of the most alive photographs I make all year.
If you're willing to travel, the beach is the full commitment version of this. Pack the family up, head to the coast, and give me a morning or an evening on the sand (or a whole day). Salt air, open sky, kids in their element. I am always available for a beach session. Always.
Closer to home, the rivers and creeks of Loudoun County and the broader Northern Virginia area give us the same energy on a smaller scale. The Shenandoah is right there and I'm told has so many secret gems. If water sounds right for your family, let's find one.
